Overview

Segments in BeyondCart let you group your app users based on shared characteristics or behaviors. Instead of blasting the same message to everyone, you can target the right people with the right content — leading to higher engagement and more sales.

A segment is essentially a saved set of rules. When a user matches those rules, they automatically become a member of that segment. You can then use segments as audiences for push notifications, email campaigns, and SMS messages.

Prerequisites

  • A BeyondCart account with an active Shopify store connected

  • At least one active mobile app channel

  • Users synced from your Shopify store or acquired through the app

Key Concepts

Dynamic vs. Static Segments

  • Dynamic segments automatically update their membership whenever user data changes. If a customer places a new order and now matches your "VIP Buyers" rules, they are added instantly. If they no longer match, they are removed.

  • Static segments contain a fixed list of users. Membership only changes when you manually add or remove users, or when a flow action updates the segment.

Channel Targets

Each segment is associated with one or more communication channels. When you create a segment, you choose which channels it applies to:

  • Push — Targets users who have a Firebase push token registered through your mobile app.

  • Email — Targets users with a valid email address on file.

  • SMS — Targets users with a phone number on file.

This means the same user might appear in a push segment but not an SMS segment if they lack a phone number.

Segment Membership Count

Every segment displays a real-time member count. This count reflects how many users currently match all of the segment's rules and have a valid token or contact detail for the selected channel.

Step-by-Step Guide

Navigating to the Segments List

Understanding the Segments List Page

The list page displays the following for each segment:

  • Name — The segment name you assigned.

  • Members — The current number of users who match the segment rules.

  • Channel — Which channel(s) the segment targets (Push, Email, or SMS).

  • Type — Whether the segment is dynamic or static.

  • Created — The date the segment was first created.

  • Last Updated — When the segment rules were last modified.

You can sort the list by any column and use the search bar to find a specific segment by name.

Quick Actions

From the segments list, you can:

  • Click a segment name to view its details and member list

  • Use the "Create Segment" button to build a new one

  • Use the three-dot menu on any row to edit, duplicate, or delete a segment

Tips and Best Practices

  • Start with a few high-impact segments — "All Customers," "Repeat Buyers," and "Inactive Users" are great starting points before building more granular groups.

  • Use dynamic segments whenever possible — They stay accurate without manual maintenance, so your campaigns always reach the right people.

  • Name segments clearly — Use descriptive names like "VIP – 5+ Orders – Push" so your team knows the audience and channel at a glance.

  • Review member counts regularly — A segment with zero members might indicate a rule that is too restrictive or a channel mismatch.

FAQ

Q: How often do dynamic segments update? A: Dynamic segments evaluate in real time. When a user's data changes (new order, updated profile, app activity), their segment membership is recalculated automatically.

Q: Can a user belong to multiple segments? A: Yes. A user can match the rules of many segments simultaneously. This is expected and useful for layered targeting.

Q: Is there a limit to how many segments I can create? A: There is no hard limit. However, we recommend keeping your segment library organized and removing segments you no longer use.

Q: Can I import segments from Shopify? A: Yes. BeyondCart supports importing Shopify customer segments. See the Creating a Segment article for details.
